Acne Control - Should You Reduce Your Sugar?

Ever since people started getting acne, people have tried to draw a link between what you eat, and what happens to your skin. For decades, dermatologists said that what you eat didn't matter -- eat all the chocolate you want -- and that the belief that what you ate was a factor in your skin was completely untrue. But people don't always listen to their doctors, and conventional wisdom usually isn't entirely correct.

Now, it's probable that eating chocolate or oily foods are not the problem. But, it's becoming increasingly accepted that what you eat -- your diet -- it at least a factor in the quality of your skin. In fact, lots of dermatologists now see a link between glucose, and the amount of sugar in your diet, and the pimples in your skin. In fact, studies are starting to show a link between the glycemic index of your diet and the blemishes in your skin.

The Glycemic index is a way to measure the amount of sugar increase in your body. This changes rapidly based on the food you eat, or other factors in your metabolism. A high index means you have a high blood sugar level, which creates a high insulin production level and other hormones. Elevated levels of these hormones can be a precursor to the creation of sebum, which is a substance that is well known to clog pores, and to eventually cause acne.

In a recent study of acne and sugar intake, they split the candidates, who all were male, into two groups. One were fed a low-glycemic food diet, and the other a standard diet. Those who were fed the low sugar diet showed significantly better skin, and a much better collection overall.

The science and research is still new, and not entirely proven. But people who are concerned about the complexion would probably do well if they minimized the amount of sugar they took in. This means sugar in its own form, plus other hidden places, such as spaghetti and pasta, potatoes, and other processed foods. Carbohydrates exist in lots of foods, not just candy and ice cream.
