I have many friends who have never experienced such bad acne that they have been left with scarring, and they have always asked why I don't just use some of the products available at drugstores to get rid of acne scars. Many people don't realize that the invasive acne scar treatment procedures many acne sufferers turn to are really the only options they have for achieving their goal.
The reason for this is that the scars they are looking to treat are more than the red marks that those over the counter products are made to help. While it is true that red or brown marks are often left on the faces of acne sufferers, it is very often also the case that they experience a loss of tissue that can only be corrected by more invasive procedures, which are also naturally more expensive. Unfortunately, although there are some topical products that claim to fill in these holes, it is obvious that this is a very difficult thing to do, and results have not been great.
Raised scars such as hypertrophic scars can be treated topically, as they have not involved a loss of tissue. Indented scars, however, are commonly treated by injections of fillers such as collagen or fat. Laser treatment methods have also been developed, whereas other types of treatments aim to break up the scar tissue. A dermatologist will be able to recommend the type of treatment that is best for you, although it is recommended you get more than one opinion.
An option that I am considering is simply treating the discoloration of my scars, which are mostly boxcar scars. I feel that I would be satisfied with the marks so long as they did not stand out by their color. After experimenting with make up and successfully covering the color of my scars, I have found that I am comfortable with the way my face looks with the little pits. In my detailed research, I have felt that the procedures are not for me at this time, both for financial reasons as well as my general physical and emotional comfort.
But not everyone feels as I do, and not everyone has the same scarring as I do. If anything, covering up and treating the discoloration is something that can be a temporary solution for you and your confidence level as you research acne scar treatment, find the right doctor, and save up money. In my personal situation, I feel that my approach to acne scars, paired with my blackhead remover knowledge will leave my skin in a condition I can be happy with.
